This project centres on creating jewellery out of found objects, using the visual theme of childhood games to recreate the sense and feeling of playfulness that is unique to childhood. The work explores themes of freedom and innocence, particularly the relationship between the adult and their innocent childhood self.
All adults, whatever their background, have in common the fact that they were once a child. As we mature, we tend to become concerned with worldly things such as economic and social status and other forms of prestige. One aspect of this process is that we begin gradually to lose some of the capacities we had as children, such as responding to people and situations is a simple, instinctive and unconditioned way. This project aims to bring these facts into focus, and ultimately to help people to recall and re-establish some of the simpler means by which they connected with the world around them when they were children. These skills and attributes are often lost or forgotten why the time a person reaches maturity.
The process of reaching maturity is not a bad thing, of course. It is a necessary aspect of any civilization. But it is an interesting question, whether certain attributes more closely associated with childhood - such as freedom of imagination and pure creativity - could someday be a valued aspect of a reimagined and a more well-rounded kind of maturity.
