Mythical creatures and fictional fairy tales that turn jewelry into amulets

Ruta Naujalyte is an Oslo based Lithuanian professional textile artist specializing in contemporary jewelry and modern arts. She finished her Masters degree in Vilnius Art Academy, textile department, in 2008.

It all began in a pile of sewing thread. During her studies she found interest in art / textile jewelry. Over the years she has experimented with various materials and techniques, but always stayed loyal to crochet. And in 2014 she decided to stick to crocheting jewelry. She mastered the craft by pushing hersel to use smaller and smaller hooks and thinner and thinner threads.

Color combination is essential in her work. She do not use sketches or patterns but rather create arranged thread combinations. First she creates miniature textile art pieces and then she transforms them into either jewelry, art objects or anything other that comes to her mind. Threads that have interesting stories usually prevail - those from a flea market or a trip, sun bleached cotton, thin vintage silk or leftover neon.

There are three collections in her portfolio that she periodically works on. They are always in progress, supplementing and coalescing each other. They all have the same technique, are rich in color and saturation. It’s important for her that each piece is unique, one of a kind, has a fictional story expressed in either film or poetry.

The first collection is called Unicorn Teardrops - abstract shapes and detailed crocheted beads.
Second - Flowers to Your Imagination - more sophisticated floral shapes.
Third - My love I will eat You Alive - it’s all about birds and feather inspired creatures.
The fourth collection is still in its early stage. It’s called Seven Midges And The Evil Witch and it’s going to be heart shaped jewelry.

Mythical creatures, fictional fairy tales and inspiring color combinations are important creative elements that converts Jewelry into amulet. Shapes evolve organically; impression of incompleteness is significant - scattered thread brings the jewelry closer to its owner. You want to tie the threads around your fingers, you want to brush them, twist them, pull them, you want to tame them and make your own. It adds presence - awareness of here and now. Her work has a macabre aspect to it. It emphasizes fragility of beauty.
